Will Smith and Michael B. Jordan will star in a sequel to 'I Am Legend'

Will Smith has had a pretty good 2022. The superstar has already received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his performance in the sports drama “King Richard,” and he looks to return to a role that audiences may not have expected. A sequel to “I Am Legend” is being planned by Warner Bros. Smith starred in the 2007 film as an immune survivor of a viral pandemic that transformed humans into monstrous mutants.

According to Deadline, Smith will not only reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, but he will also co-star in the untitled sequel with Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther”). Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the original film, is also returning as a screenwriter. Richard Matheson’s post-apocalyptic novel has previously been adapted for the big screen in films such as “The Last Man On Earth” and “The Omega Man.”

It’s quite a turnaround considering Smith stated in 2012 that he was not interested in returning.

Although no director has been named, it’s worth noting that Jordan is making his directorial debut with “Creed III” and could be an organic choice. If you haven’t seen the original film, here’s a synopsis:

Robert Neville, a brilliant scientist, is a survivor of a man-made plague that transforms humans into bloodthirsty mutants. He wanders alone through New York City, calling out for other possible survivors, and works on finding a cure for the plague using his own immune blood. Neville knows he is badly outnumbered and the odds are against him, and all the while, the infected wait for him to make a mistake that will deliver Neville into their hands.

Ridley Scott was set to direct Arnold Schwarzenegger in an atmospheric 1990s version of “I Am Legend,” complete with practical makeup for the creatures, before the studio opted for the Will Smith version, which relied on wonky CGI rather than in-camera effects.

If you’re excited about the rebooting of the classic Smith flick, perhaps a trip down memory lane with its official trailer will scratch your itch?
